On the back of her recent French Open success, Sharapova had been installed as favourite to claim the Wimbledon title following the exit of Serena Williams in the third round, but in the battle between two of women’s tennis’ hardest hitters, she was seen off by Kerber.
Having shot into a 5-2 lead in the third set, 26-year-old Kerber was broken by Sharapova, who then held serve.
She then took Kerber’s next service game to deuce also, but despite hanging around in a blazing act of defiance, she couldn’t hang around and eventually succumbed on Kerber’s SEVENTH match point.
It means Sharapova must continue her wait to add to the Wimbledon title she won 10 years ago as a 17 year-old, while Kerber moves into the quarter-finals, where she’ll meet Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard.
