With the match slowly drifting away from her, the world No 44 was left utterly frustrated. She eventually vented it out by throwing her racket into the middle of the court after an intense rally.
Despite letting her anger get the better of her, the 31-year-old claimed the final set after all, holding her nerves to get the better of Kanepi in her third tie-break of the day.
Giorgi will face yet another veteran in Victoria Azarenka in the Miami Open second-round at the Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday.
The pair have met on three occasions on tour so far. Giorgi claimed wins in their first two meetings, defeating Azarenka at the 2014 Eastbourne International and the 2018 Pan Pacific Open.
The tennis star, who hails from Macerata in central Italy, won her first title in two years at the Merida Open last month. She defeated Rebecca Peterson in the final 7-6, 1-6, 6-2. The win at the WTA 250 event was Giorgi’s fourth career title from ten finals played.
It topped a stunning week in Mexico for her, defeating current doubles world No 1 Katerina Siniakova in the semi-final.

On her clinching glory, the Italian said: “What a surprise. This atmosphere, it was an amazing week. What a final we did Rebecca.”
